During a normal year if you visit the center of Prague or any town in the Czech Republic on November 11, you might see a man on a white horse leading a procession. These processions are in honor of St. Martin, patron of the poor, and the white horse represents winter and snow. Unfortunately this year public activities have been canceled but you can hold your own celebration at home. Not only on this day but for most of November, look for restaurants serving goose and St. Martin’s wine (Husa a Svatomartinské vino) which is the traditional food for the feast day so go support your local restaurants. If we are lucky enough to be able to be outside and the farmers markets are open, there usually are stalls and celebrations in many squares in Prague including namesti Jiřího z Poděbrad and all around the Czech Republic. To be safe this year, pick up your order and go home to enjoy with your family.
