NEW FEATURE FOR MONTHLY HAPPENINGS: “OFF THE BEATEN PATH”
IWAP Member Polly Story-Lebl and her husband, Michal, have been venturing outside of Prague on their e-bikes to many places “off the beaten path”. She summarizes what they’ve done AND rates the locations so that you can pick the activity level you prefer, from walking to hiking, mountain biking to e-biking. A link to Michal’s blog is also available.
Lavender Fields of Moravia
Most people know that Southern Moravia is all about the wine. The 65-kilometer (40 mile) long Mikulov Wine Trail starts in the town of Mikulov.
But another lovely feature is the beautiful lavender fields nearby. It is something like the one in Provence but easier to get to. The photographers in our group would be in heaven if they hit the season just right which is about the middle of June and lasts about a month. When in full bloom it is spectacular and there are shops full of lavender coffee, lavender oils, lavender soap, lavender ice-cream. You name it!
In the Břeclav region, the purple color of lavender shines through the yellow rape fields in the summer. Whether you use a car or a bike, there are several castles in proximity. This includes the Castle Mikulov, Chateau Lednice, and the Valtice Palace (UNESCO) which are all very worthy of a visit.
Activity Level: This area is good for strolls, hikes, and definitely biking for all fitness levels.
