The European Night of Museums was created in 1999, and quickly became an iconic event in Europe. Organised in France by the French ministry of culture, the European Night of Museums received the sponsoring of the Unesco and the Council of Europe, and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) promoting the event worldwide.

The first Prague Museum Night took place in 2004 and the Festival of Museum Nights, has been organized every year since 2005 by the Association of Museums and Galleries of the Czech Republic. During this special event, museums, galleries, and other cultural sites stay open after dusk, usually until midnight, and in addition to their exhibitions there will be various different activities for adults and children.

The national opening of the 20th Museum Nights Festival will take place on Friday, May 17th in the premises of the East Bohemian Museum in Pardubice.
