Historical building of the National Museum
This exhibition, based on interesting objects from the collection of the National Museum, describes a difficult decade of Czechoslovak history under totalitarian rule. It presents the broader context of the 1950s, through central events such as the currency reform, the trial of politician Milada Horáková and priest Josef Toufar, Olympic success of Emil Zátopek, as well as the propaganda film industry, with a focus on the deaths of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Czech party chairman Klement Gottwald.
In the words of Professor Mikhal Stehlik, Deputy Director of the Museum, “the 50s are still more than just a memory within the Czech collective consciousness, not yet a series of facts to be stored away and forgotten in history books”.
