Once upon a time, there was a crochet group that meet twice monthly at the IWAP office. Soon everyone had all of the scarves, slippers and blankets that they and their family members could use. They then started making scarves and caps to donate to the charities IWAP has supported over the years. Slowly, most members moved away, and the group became inactive.

Then a new member moved to Prague, and as a very experienced knitter, looking to meet others with the same interest, so a new interest group – – knitting – – was started. Happily, they also welcomed crocheters from the old group!

We now meet weekly, and as soon as we arrive, the lovely staff at Café Misto has our regular tables ready and take our coffee orders.

And almost immediately, we all fall onto each other with our technical questions and requests for help:

  • What size needles should I use?
  • How do you do this stitch?
  • How do I start this pattern?
  • Show me that again?
  • Who has scissors?
  • How do I add beads to the edge?
  • What is the best way to sew this seam?

This group is the perfect place to come to learn to knit or crochet, there is a lot of help to get you started.

And those who are “old hands” always have something more to learn by sharing stitches and secrets from their years of experience.

The fact that we are from different countries, we each have different ways of doing things and perfect solutions for every problem. We have also come to know each other too, but there is not a lot of time as we are always focused on what we are making.

This is all a very long way to say it is a great group, with a wonderfully welcoming leader. All members are most generous with their time and help for others.

Some comments collected at a recent afternoon meeting:

M: I enjoy the camaraderie.

D: I love the way we all help each other.

K: We welcome everyone, all crafts. We now have embroiders, lace makers, and someone doing loom knitting.

D: It was great to get back to the knitting and crocheting I used to do many long years ago. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I finish a sweater.

E: I enjoy meeting people from all over the world to see what they are working on. I have learned a lot and have taken on new projects that I would not have done on my own.

C: We make field trips to visit various yarn stores around the city for inspiration.

B: The group is very friendly and easy going, especially for us beginners.

Knitters and crocheters of all skill levels are welcome; beginners will find great help to get started, and those who are more experienced will find a wealth of ideas shared among members.
