Carnival of Malá strana and Hradčany meeting point is at Loretánská street
Masopust is the traditional Czech carnival celebrating the arrival of spring, fertility, animal fecundity, joy, togetherness and farewell to winter. The word “masopust” itself, originates from old Czech and literally means “giving up meat” – the beginning of the fasting period before Easter. People dress up in costumes and masks while singing and dancing and the parade goes from house to house accompanied by bands and receiving treats along the way. This year there will be a mask competition with valuable prizes and the Prague Fair Orchestra will play along the way.
Celebrations will take place in Žižkov, Jiřího z Poděbrady and in other Prague districts, but the following information refers only to the traditional carnival of Malá strana and Hradčany. Please check the website for other carnival celebrations taking place in Prague.
