16.00 – 17.00
Starts at the Old Town Bridge Tower
Another beautiful tradition of the season is Prague’s lamplighter, lampář. Dressed in a 19th century costume, the lamplighter makes his way along Charles Bridge in the direction of Malá strana, lighting gas lamps using a 2.3 m long pole. Street lighting was first introduced in 1847, when 200 gas lamps were installed. By 1940 there were reportedly almost 9,000 in the city. Gas light was also used to illuminate Prague’s parks, waterfronts and islands.
