Lake Lipno is a beautiful destination for a family holiday and is located by car approximately 2 hours 30 minutes south of Prague to Southern Bohemia. We have visited Lipno twice over the last five years and had a wonderful time.

Both times, we chose to stay in the Hotel Frymburk, website here, located in the pretty town of Frymburk, overlooking the lake with its own private beach and boats to rent. When we arrived the children could not wait to jump into the lake to cool off! It was a peaceful setting on a small sandy beach with a view of small yachts moored and the lake behind. On our second visit, the weather was scorching so we rented a small motor boat and sailed around the lake and we jumped into the lake to cool off.

The hotel is a good size with its own parking. It has its own aquapark (also open to the public), a salt cave, a wellness area with spa treatments, a restaurant, a dining room for buffet breakfast, a games room, a cukrana, a playroom for small children and an outside play area. Our family room contained two separate bedrooms which were clean and spacious with good size wardrobes and a balcony. The small fridge was very useful to keep drinks cool.

Some evenings we made the short walk into Frymburk, where we discovered a couple of lovely restaurants for dinner. One place overlooked the lake, so one evening we watched the sunset over the water.

A very short walk away from the hotel is a bike rental shop, Lipno Centrum, website here, that also offers kick bikes. I had never heard of a kick bike before, and one day we decided to rent one as a family. The shop could accommodate us with a bike to fit all our ages and the man in the shop kindly and gracefully demonstrated the technique for using the kick bike. It was an interesting experience getting to grips with a big scooter. We used the kick bikes to travel 9km along Lake Lipno to the small town of Lipno. The distance did not seem too bad at the beginning, but by the time we reached Lipno we were ready for a big cold drink and a hearty lunch followed by ice cream before we could even think about heading back again! The off road safe pathway from Frymburk to Lipno lined the edge of the lake all the way, so we could stop at any point on a beach to catch our breath. We saw plenty of cyclists whizzing past us, but when we saw the odd fellow kick biker we all laughed and said “hello!” This day trip on the kick bikes was my favourite. On our second visit, my husband and son rented electric scooters which were pretty fast but fun.

It is also possible to go on a boat trip between Frymburk and Lipno on a decent size boat.

There is also a small tourist train that goes between Frymburk and Lipno a few times a day and the stop is right by the hotel. One day we drove down to Lipno town and were amazed to be able to park for free at the foot of the chair lift.

We took the pleasant chair lift ride up the mountain to the top where we could enter the treetop walkway, Stezka Korunami Stromu, website here, a spectacular wooden structure with spiral slopes up to the top walking through the treetops and above. Once we reached the top we enjoyed a spectacular view of Lipno and the lake.

Another fun activity for children and adults is the bobsleigh, Slideland Bobova Draha Lipno, website here. It is located halfway down the mountain so after the treetop walk we meandered down a forest covered path to the start of the bobsleigh. This was a big favourite of both my children and husband! Near the bobsleigh is also a high rope park, plus a zip wire ride across a small pond. The rope park is Rope Park Lipno, please see their website here for more information.

From the sports centre we hired a quad bike for all of us to sit on and cycle, but this was our least favourite activity as it was extremely difficult to manoeuvre and pedal. We also followed some tourist walking routes to explore the area. Several times on our various means of transport (foot, kick bike, quad bike, car), we passed a campsite located right next to the lake which looked like another pleasant option for accommodation.

Lipno village has a great harbour and grassy beaches for sunbathing, boats to rent and accommodation right by the lake. There are plenty of restaurants and places to get ice cream!

From Frymburk/Lipno you can travel a short distance to some places that are well worth a visit; Hluboká nad Vltavou castle and Český Krumlov. This was a great holiday with plenty of outdoor activities for the entire family. Lipno.cz website here and more information here.
