In case of a non-urgent emergency, contact doctors and/or hospitals directly. The hospitals Na Homolce and Motol are the most foreigner-friendly, with special departments established to support you.

24-Hour Pharmacies

The pharmacy (lékárna) is generally open Monday–Friday 8.00–17.00 / 18.00. However, there are several 24-hour pharmacies, many of which are provided by hospitals:

Medical Emergency – Important Steps

To follow are guidelines intended to help you at the time of an emergency, complete responsibility is yours exclusively.

You are encouraged to plan and test your route to the nearest hospital (Nemocnice). Also speak with your doctor about emergency care procedures.

  • Medical condition is critical, CALL an AMBULANCE on 112 (English) or 155 (Czech):
    • Ambulance will arrive approximately 10 – 15 minutes.
    • Cost of ambulance is approximately 2500-4000czk, be prepared to pay immediately.
    • Hospital will be expecting you and your treatment is expedited ahead of other less urgent cases.
  • Mandatory Items to take with the patient to the hospital:
    • Passport / Czech ID.
    • Health Insurance Card or copy of health insurance card.
    • Cash or Credit Card (Bankomats maybe near the hospital).
  • Medical condition is not critical, you can call an Ambulance, a Taxi or drive yourself.
  • On the way to the hospital:
    • Call your own doctor – They may be able to call the hospital so the staff expects you.
    • At Motol Hospital (Nemocnice), you can call the Foreigner’s Office (cizinec oddělení). Make a request for them to meet you at the Emergency Room if medically necessary. You can also verify your insurance with them.
    • Hospital treatment is affordable compared to other countries. Typical medical expenses range from 1000-3000czk, although services may cost more.
  • Arrival at the hospital:
    • In an ambulance, the service will take you directly to the Emergency Room (pohotovostní místnost). They will talk you through the process until the doctor receives you.
    • Driving yourself, follow the signs to Emergency Room (pohotovostní místnost). In many cases you can park near the Emergency Room exist.
    • If possible, at Motol Hospital, go to the foreigners department (cizinec oddělení) first. You will complete registration forms and be direct to the Emergency Room (pohotovostní místnost). The staff in the foreigners office speak many languages so ask the attendant if someone speaks your home language.
    • If you think it is medically necessary, or if it is outside of regular business hours, go straight to the Emergency Room (pohotovostní místnost).
    • At Motol Nemocnice there are separate emergency rooms for adults and children. Follow the signs dependent on the care needed:
      • Dětská pohotovostní = Children’s Emergency
      • Dospělí pohotovostní = Adult’s Emergency
  • Treatment:
    • Upon completion of treatment, you will be asked to return to the Foreigner’s Department (cizinec oddělení) to make payment for the services. If the office is closed, you will be asked to return to the hospital the following day to finalize payment.
