SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker for our May meeting is Rosalind Miranda\, who was born in NYC\, and was inspired by her father’s love of art and her grandmother’s passion for music. She taught music at a University of Connecticut high school before moving to New Zealand in 1972 as a college Music Mistress. \nLater\, she bought a 26-foot yacht in Fiji and sailed the Pacific for four years\, visiting the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu)\, the British Solomon Islands\, Papua New Guinea\, then sailed north across the equator to the Truk Lagoon\, Saipan\, Japan\, Taiwan\, and Hong Kong. She became proficient in the use of the sextant\, and authored a book on celestial navigation. She is a member of the Royal Institute of Navigation\, and still teaches astronavigation. In 1976\, she resumed music teaching in Hong Kong. Since 1989\, she’s lived in a small mountain village near Valencia\, Spain\, traveling often\, especially to the Czech Republic. \nHer time is spent lecturing on art\, editing (including for the Brno Zoo)\, attending concerts\, and composing. A Piano Trio of hers was performed in New York in September and a short solo violin Scherzo was performed at the 67th Kocian violin competition in Ústí nad Orlicí. \nOur Monthly Meetings are where current and prospective members meet to engage in discussion and share experiences of Prague life. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and visit with other IWAP members. Looking forward to seeing you there and bring along anyone interested to learn more about IWAP!  \nTuesday 20 May 2025 \n09:30 – 10:00 arrival\, refreshments\, social time \n10:00 – 11:30 announcements\, guest speaker \nAnglo American University campus\, Letenska 5\, Prague 1 \nNearest tram/metro stop: Malostranska

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:For International Women’s Day we planned a special celebration in honour of women. At our March Monthly Meeting\, on Tuesday 18 March at AAU\, we are hosting a panel discussion where three guest speakers will talk about their experiences in public service (from ambassadorship to serving in the Peace Corps)\, about their professional paths\, about the future of women in Czech politics and the opportunities women have to make a difference outside of politics. \nAyesha Ali\, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Czechia\, is a career diplomat who joined Pakistan’s Foreign Service in September 1999 and has served in Pakistan Missions in New York\, New Delhi\, Washington D.C. and Tokyo and in various offices in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs including Director General/Director for China\, Director (Americas)\, Director (Audit & Accounts)\, Director (Organization)\, Deputy Director (Europe) and Section Officer (Arab Affairs). Ambassador Ayesha Ali holds Master Degrees in International Public Policy (MIPP) and English Literature. \nLorna Phillipson is the Founder and former Executive Director of the Phillipson Institute for Economic and Public Policy. She spent decades as an international banker and venture capitalist\, and NYU adjunct professor. Nominated by the NJ Democratic Party to run for the state legislature in 2015\, she ran for US Congress on the ballot with Hillary Clinton in 2016. Her interest in international affairs led her to become a Peace Corps community service volunteer in the city of Zhytomyr\, Ukraine\, as well as assisting an NGO for veterans’ substance abuse there. Lorna is semi-retired in Prague\, but keeps being politically connected with her Congressional\, State Department\, and UN contacts in the US\, UK\, Canada\, and Denmark. \nIvana Grollová\, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Mongolia\, is a Czech diplomat who served at the Czech Mission to the UN in NY and served twice as deputy Ambassador at the Embassy in Beijing\, where she gave birth to her third child. Prior to her career in politics\, she graduated with a PhD in Mongolian and Russian Studies\, and worked as interpreter\, scholar\, and executive director. \nOur Monthly Meetings are where current and prospective members meet to engage in discussion and share experiences of Prague life. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and visit with other IWAP members.
