In 1972 a gift of gingerbread was given to the priest of the church by one of the parishioners, Mrs. Horalkova.  The gingerbread figures were so beautiful that the priest preferred to exhibit them in the church and so the tradition began.  This Christmas take a short bus ride from Dejvicka metro station and visit the pretty sv. Matěje Church.  It is a short walk uphill from the U Matěje bus stop.  Inside the church you can see an incredible Nativity of more than 200 figures made of gingerbread.  After your visit, you can continue walking on the hiking trails in the area as the church is in the spectacular Divoká Šárka forest preserve in Prague 6.
